When a pet emergency arises, you want to be prepared. In addition to knowing specific emergency phone numbers and addresses (click HERE), you should always have basic first aid items available for quick accessibility. Dr. Drazner suggests you assemble a simple, but important “Pet First Aid Kit” with at least the following items:
- the names, addresses and phone numbers of:
- your primary Veterinarian
- the Wright Animal Hospital’s number is 847-299-0135
- any secondary Veterinarian
- a close by emergency hospital
- a 4 oz bottle of 4% hydrogen peroxide
- a 4 oz bottle of eyewash
- a small container of a mild dishwashing liquid
- small tube of lubricating jelly
- antibiotic ointment packs
- insect sting relief packs
- antiseptic cleansing wipes
- burn relief packs
- rectal thermometer
- tweezers
- a pair of blunt end scissors
- 1” X 5 yd first aid tape roll
- 2” X 4.1 yd conforming gauze roll bandages
- 3” X 4.1 yd conforming roll bandage
- 3” X 5 yd elastic bandage wrap
- 3” cotton tipped applicators
- 2” X 2” gauze dressing pads
- 3” X 3” gauze dressing pads
- exam quality vinyl gloves (two pair)
- a pair of rubber gloves such as those used around the kitchen
- a can of soft pet food
- an oral syringe (a turkey baster or a bulb syringe will work fine)
In addition, you should have ready access to a leash and muzzle as well as to a pet carrier for emergency transportation.
