Onion Poisoning

That’s right, folks! Your pet can be poisoned by onions! Although generally not fatal, they can cause quite a bit of discomfort.

Onions contain disulfide, a substance which can cause oxidative damage to the red blood cells in dogs and cats. As few as two slices of onion a week can damage these cells sufficiently to alter the flow of oxygen to meet their body’s requirements.

Symptoms Of Onion Poisoning

  • loss of weight
  • rapid pulse
  • excessive panting
  • depression
  • weakness
  • pale gums and mouth
  • lethargic

Treatment

Contact your Veterinarian immediately! Explain your suspicions and follow their advice.
